Library Director

The Frankford Public Library (Frankford, DE) is seeking talented applicants with experience in public library management and administration for the position of Library Director. Located in Sussex County, DE, Frankford Public Library is a rural community library devoted to enhancing and sustaining the educational, creative, and cultural needs of our diverse community. The Frankford Public Library is an independent, non-profit library and part of the consortium of Delaware libraries. The 6,000 square foot building has been newly renovated and expanded in 2013.

This position requires supervising the daily operation of the library including personnel administration, collection development, fiscal management, facilities management, and programming functions. Primary responsibilities may include:

  • Direct, motivate, and manage a well-trained staff sufficient to meet the needs of internal and external customers
  • Represent and promote the library within the community
  • Evaluate, identify, and respond to the current and future needs of the community, including collections, programming, educational opportunities, technologies, and services
  • Participate actively in trainings, meetings, workshops, and conferences to maintain awareness of developments relevant to current and future library services
  • Develop annual library operating budget, which can include grants and donations, for board/county council approval
  • Follow accepted financial practices to monitor expenditures and to ensure maximum benefit to the community
  • Direct the development and maintenance of a public library collection
  • Direct the acquisition and maintenance of current and upcoming technologies to ensure access for the community
  • Assist staff and patrons in use of technologies, including computer/Internet use, e-government services, e-readers, copiers, printers
  • Assist staff and patrons in finding of desired materials
  • Administer maintenance of library facilities and equipment
  • Administer policies of governing bodies (board, county, and state), make policy recommendations that benefit library services
  • Prepare and submit reports, statistics, and budgets by the established timelines
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience working in public libraries
  • Experience supervising and managing staff, preferably in a public library
  • Communication skills necessary to represent the needs of the library to the public and the governing board
  • Technical knowledge to include word processing, desktop publishing, use of electronic resources, internet research, social media, basic computer troubleshooting, and use of an integrated library system (ILS)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Management experience in a Delaware public library
  • Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university

Youth Services / Young Adult Coordinator(s)

The Frankford Public Library (Frankford, DE) is seeking talented applicants with experience in Youth Services and Young Adult Services. Located in Sussex County, DE, Frankford Public Library is a rural community library devoted to enhancing and sustaining the educational, creative, and cultural needs of our diverse community. The Frankford Public Library is an independent, non-profit library and part of the consortium of Delaware libraries. The 6,000 square foot building has been newly renovated and expanded in 2013.

The position(s) require planning, coordinating, and conducting programming for both age groups, plus collection development. Youth Services involves working with ages ranging from infancy to 6th grade, while Young Adult Services focuses on teens from 7th-12th grade. The coordinator(s) will be expected to work independently and to provide materials and programs designed to foster literacy and enthusiasm for learning. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop, plan, and present regular and special programming events
  • Develop and maintain collections of print and non-print materials
  • Plan and execute Summer Reading Programs
  • Assist patrons, especially children/teens, in use of technologies, including computer/Internet use, e-government service, e-readers, copiers, printers
  • Assist children in finding desired materials
  • Create promotional materials and displays to highlight collections and services
  • Craft and coordinate outreach to local schools and organizations
  • Inform and train staff on current programming and acquisitions
  • Participate in department meetings at all levels
  • Operate within the established budget for their department
  • Provide and assure a safe and accessible library environment
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be required

The successful candidate(s) will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience working with children and in public libraries and an understanding of professional norms and ethics in both fields,
  • Technical knowledge to include word processing, desktop publishing, use of electronic resources, internet research, social media, basic computer troubleshooting, and use of an integrated library system (ILS), and
  • a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
  • Programming and Youth Services experience in a Delaware public library is preferred but not required.

Programming and outreach will be planned and carried out by YS/YA Coordinator(s) under the supervision of the Library Director.  Weekly hours and compensation will be determined according to the incumbent’s subject knowledge and experience.
